1. Convert the following into indirect speech:
(a) The teacher said, "One must work or starve".
Ans: The teacher stated that one must work or starve.
(b) The teacher said, "Work hard because English is not easy to learn".
Ans: The teacher warned the students that they should work hard because English is not easy to learn.
(c) The students said, "They visited the court in the 5th semester".
Ans: The students said that they had visited the court in the 5th semester.
(d) He asked, "Have you completed your practical work?"
Ans: He enquired if I had completed my practical work.

2. Convert as directed:
(a) We shall go to the Supreme Court next week. (Interrogative)
Ans: Shall we go to the Supreme Court next week?
(b) He will never speak the truth. (Positive)
Ans: Will he ever speak the truth?
(c) Which book are you reading? (Past perfect)
Ans: Which book had you been reading?
(d) Why does she not help you? (Passive voice)
Ans: Why are you not helped by her?

3. What do you understand by the following:

Ans: The law is being applied ex post facto.
(c) Prima facie
Ans: Prima facie, this looks like a case of murder.
(d) Sine die
Ans: Due to the ongoing pandemic, the court is adjourned sine die.

11. Comprehension:
The vital distinction between the Constitution and the ordinary Law lies in the criterion of validity. In case of ordinary law, its validity can be questioned and when so questioned it must be justified by references to higher law. In case of Constitution, its validity is inherent and lies within itself. According to Hans Kelson, entire legal system is a hierarchy of norms. Every norm owes its validity to some higher norm the grundnorm which is the apex.
(i) Give a suitable title to the passage
Ans: The grundnorm
(ii) Differentiate between Constitution and ordinary law
Ans: In case of ordinary law, its validity can be questioned and when so questioned it must be justified by references to higher law. In case of Constitution, its validity is inherent and lies within itself.
