Essentials of a Joint Hindu Family
A Joint Hindu Family (JHF) is a fundamental unit of Hindu society. Its core essentials include:
Common Ancestor: It consists of all persons lineally descended from a common ancestor.
Composition: It includes their wives and unmarried daughters. Even a widowed daughter returning to her father's house can be part of it.
Existence of Property is NOT Essential: A family can be "joint" even if they do not own a single piece of property. The "jointness" refers to food, worship, and estate.
Continuity: It is a shifting unit; members are added by birth and marriage and removed by death or partition.
