Maintenance Pendente Lite
Governed by Section 24 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, Maintenance Pendente Lite (meaning "during the litigation") is temporary financial support.
Objective: To ensure that a spouse (husband or wife) who lacks sufficient independent income can support themselves and meet the expenses of the ongoing legal proceedings (e.g., a divorce or restitution case).
Eligibility: Either the husband or the wife can apply for it if they can prove they have no independent source of income.
Timeline: The Act stipulates that the application for this maintenance should ideally be disposed of within 60 days of serving notice to the other party.
