Mercantile Agent

 Under the Sale of Goods Act, 1930, a Mercantile Agent is a specialized type of agent who has the authority to handle goods in a commercial capacity.

Definition under Section 2(9) of the Sale of Goods Act

A mercantile agent is defined as an agent having, in the customary course of business as such agent, authority either:

  • To sell goods;

  • To consign goods for the purpose of sale;

  • To buy goods; or

  • To raise money on the security of goods.
