Lok Adalats (People’s Courts) are a specialized ADR forum in India designed for the amicable settlement of disputes. Section 19 and Section 20 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
Jurisdiction: They can handle cases pending before any court or matters at the pre-litigation stage.
Types of Cases:
Compoundable criminal offenses.
Matrimonial/Family disputes (except divorce).
Land acquisition cases.
Labour disputes.
Motor Accident claims (MACT).
Bank recovery and electricity/water bill disputes.
Constraint: They cannot decide cases relating to an offense not compoundable under any law.
