Under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the following categories of people are entitled to free legal services:
Social Categories: Members of Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Vulnerable Groups: Women and children.
Victims of Hardship: Victims of human trafficking, beggars, or victims of mass disasters, ethnic violence, or industrial disasters.
Disabled Persons: Persons with disabilities (as defined under the Disability Act).
Persons in Custody: Any person in a protective home, juvenile home, or psychiatric hospital.
Economic Criteria: Any person whose annual income is less than the amount prescribed by the State Government (usually ranging from ₹1,00,000 to ₹3,00,000 depending on the state and court).
