Furlough

Furlough is a period of temporary release granted to a prisoner who is serving a long-term sentence.

  • Nature: Unlike Parole (which is discretionary and for specific reasons), Furlough is seen as a right of the prisoner to maintain family and social ties.

  • Condition: It is generally granted only if the prisoner has maintained good conduct and has served a specific portion of their sentence.

  • Purpose: To break the monotony of prison life and ensure the prisoner does not lose touch with the outside world.
