Legally, a crime is an act or omission that violates a public law and is punishable by the State. In India, most crimes are defined under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) or the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
For an act to be a "crime," it must generally satisfy four elements:
Human Being: The act must be committed by a person.
Mens Rea: A guilty mind or criminal intent.
Actus Reus: An actual physical act or illegal omission.
Injury: Harm caused to another person, property, or society at large.
