Definition of Pollution

Broadly, pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse changes.

  • Legal Framework: Under Section 2(c) of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the law defines "environmental pollution" as the presence of any environmental pollutant in the environment.

  • Environmental Pollutant [Section 2(b)]: This is defined as any solid, liquid, or gaseous substance present in such concentration as may be, or tend to be, injurious to the environment.

  • Nature: Pollution is not just the presence of a substance, but its presence at a harmful concentration.
