Environmental Laboratories

Section 12 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 gives powers to the the Central Government to establish or recognize laboratories for testing samples of air, water, and soil to ensure scientific monitoring of pollution levels.

  • Functions:

    • To carry out functions entrusted by the Central Government.

    • To analyze samples sent by Government Analysts (appointed under Section 13).

  • Procedure: Under Section 11, any officer empowered by the Central Government can take samples for analysis. The report signed by a Government Analyst is admissible as evidence in legal proceedings (Section 14).
