Work Committee

The Works Committee is a primary internal mechanism for dispute prevention and promoting amity in the workplace.

  • Section 3 of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947: In the case of any industrial establishment in which 100 or more workmen are employed (or have been employed in the preceding 12 months), the appropriate Government may require the employer to constitute a Works Committee.

  • Composition:

    • It consists of representatives of both the employer and the workmen.

    • The number of representatives of workmen shall not be less than the number of representatives of the employer.

  • Duty: Their task is to promote measures for securing and preserving amity and good relations between the employer and workmen, and to comment upon matters of their common interest or concern. It is essentially a consultative body, not a decision-making body like an Industrial Tribunal.
