Note: Attempt all questions. Each question carries 4 marks
(a) Acquittal
An acquittal is a formal certification by a court that a person is not guilty of the crime with which they were charged. This occurs at the conclusion of a criminal trial when the prosecution fails to prove the defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, or when a judge finds the evidence insufficient for a conviction.
(b) Adjournment
An adjournment is the suspension or postponement of a court session or a legal proceeding until another time or place. A judge may grant an adjournment for various reasons, such as to allow a lawyer more time to prepare, to wait for a key witness to arrive, or simply to conclude the day's business.
(c) Testimony
Testimony consists of oral or written evidence given by a witness under oath or affirmation in a court of law or before a judicial officer. It is one of the primary ways that facts are established during a trial.
(d) Allegation
An allegation is an assertion or claim made by a party in a legal proceeding that they intend to prove. It is a statement of fact contained in a legal pleading (like a complaint) that has not yet been proven true.
(a) A law unto themselves
This refers to someone who ignores standard rules or conventions and behaves according to their own judgment.
Sentence: The lead investigator was a law unto himself, often ignoring departmental protocols to pursue leads that his superiors had dismissed.
(b) Caught red-handed
This means to be discovered in the middle of committing a crime or doing something wrong.
Sentence: The security cameras provided undeniable evidence, as the shoplifter was caught red-handed trying to slip the watch into his pocket.
(c) With no strings attached
This describes an offer or agreement that is given freely without any hidden conditions or future obligations.
Sentence: The university offered her a full scholarship with no strings attached, allowing her to choose any major without having to commit to a specific research project.
(d) Fine print
This refers to the small text in a contract or advertisement that often contains important restrictions or unpleasant "catches."
Sentence: Before signing the lease agreement, make sure you read the fine print to see if there are any hidden fees for early termination.
