The Central Zoo Authority is a statutory body established to oversee the management and standards of zoos in India to ensure they contribute to conservation.
Defined in Section 38A of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
Primary Function (Section 38C): The main function is to lay down minimum standards for housing, upkeep, and veterinary care of the animals kept in a zoo.
Other Key Functions:
Recognition: No zoo can operate without being recognized by the Authority.
Conservation Breeding: Identifying endangered species for the purpose of "ex-situ" conservation and assigning responsibility to specific zoos.
Exchange: Regulating the exchange of animals between zoos for breeding purposes.
Training: Coordinating the training of zoo personnel.
