Ozon Layer Depletion

The ozone layer, located in the stratosphere, acts as a shield absorbing the majority of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Its depletion is primarily caused by Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other halons.

  • Environmental Damages:

    • Human Health: Increased incidence of skin cancers, cataracts, and weakened immune systems.

    • Terrestrial Plants: Interference with photosynthesis, leading to lower crop yields.

    • Aquatic Ecosystems: Damage to phytoplankton, which forms the base of the ocean food web.

  • International Legal Response: The Montreal Protocol (1987) is the primary international treaty designed to phase out the production of substances responsible for ozone depletion.
