Need for the Indian Forest Act, 1927

The Act was conceived during the colonial era and continues to serve several functional needs:

  • Consolidation of Laws: It brought together various local forest laws into one comprehensive national framework.

  • Regulation of Forest Produce: To control the movement (transit) of timber and other forest resources.

  • Revenue Generation: It allows the State to levy duties on timber and other produce.

  • Defining State Ownership: It provides a legal mechanism for the State to claim ownership over "wastelands" or forest lands not previously owned by individuals.

  • Conservation: It establishes categories of forests to protect biodiversity and prevent unauthorized encroachment or deforestation.
