Radioactive Pollution

Radioactive pollution is the physical pollution of living organisms and their environment as a result of the release of radioactive substances into the atmosphere, especially during nuclear explosions, the testing of nuclear weapons, or the mining and processing of radioactive ores.

  • Sources: Nuclear power plant accidents, improper disposal of nuclear waste, and medical use of isotopes.

  • Effects: It can cause genetic mutations, various types of cancer (like leukemia), and immediate radiation sickness. Because radioactive isotopes have long half-lives, this pollution can persist in the environment for thousands of years.
