Under Section 2(s) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, a "workman" is any person (including an apprentice) employed in any industry to do any manual, unskilled, skilled, technical, operational, clerical, or supervisory work for hire or reward.
Key Exclusions:
Persons subject to the Air Force Act, Army Act, or Navy Act.
Persons employed in the Police service or as officers/employees of a prison.
Persons employed mainly in a managerial or administrative capacity.
Persons in a supervisory capacity drawing wages exceeding $₹10,000$ per month or exercising functions mainly of a managerial nature.
